Gary Oppedahl, Director, Economic Development Department, has a conversation with Robert Kwasny of Watch ABQ regarding the progress his department has already accomplished. Gary comes from the private sector where he has spent much of his career fostering tech start-ups including EMCORE and most recently TriLumina, both of which are built from research conducted at Sandia National Labs. Mr. Oppedahl has been involved with business start-up activity in Silicon Valley and is a former Intel employee whose duties included new site start-ups. Mayor Berry has directed Gary to work with existing tech-transfer leaders and innovators in Albuquerque and around the world with the goal of building a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Albuquerque and to identify opportunities for growth and job creation; more specifically – the commercialization of research from our National Labs and our Universities.

THE ALBUQUERQUE BREAKING BAD FAN FEST: The 1st annual ABQ Breaking Bad Fan Fest is more than just a festival, yo. It’s a chance for Breaking Bad fans to make their pilgrimage to Albuquerque, see the filming sites, meet Breaking Bad cast, and meet other fans from all over the world. Come be a part of Breaking Bad fandom history. There will be lots of surprise guests at Fest events. Let’s Cook!
FRIDAY NOV 7TH:

$16 for 2 tickets (Buy Now) 2pm-4pm Geeks Who Drink Breaking Bad Trivia Contest at Tractor Brewery–Wells Park. Prizes are VIP passes for the winning team. Under 21 must be accompanied by adult and are not eligible for VIP passes. Open to the public.

$10 (Buy Now) 5pm-7pm Karting Bad. Go Kart races at Albuquerque Indoor Karting (as seen in Breaking Bad). The fastest time wins Breaking Bad: The Complete Series 2014 Barrel [Blu-ray] collection. This is a great all-ages event. Open to the public.

7pm-8pm “Breaking Bad Cast” panel discussion featuring Steven Michael Quezada, Charles Baker, Jeremiah Bitsui, Luis & Daniel Moncada, and Max Arciniega, moderated by podcasters Jim & ARon of Baldmove.

Research Excellence

New Mexico Tech has jokingly been called a research institution that happens to have a university. In reality, it’s not far from the truth. However, the vast majority of research projects have a strong student component.

Nearly all professors in every academic department maintain active research projects that involve undergraduate students. Also, more than 400 graduate students are conducting research – along with their academic advisors and committees – to finish their master’s and doctorate degrees.
